Meet the Team
Stephanie
My roots as a dyer begin in small-town Central Maine, where I was born and raised. I get my love for crafts from my mom Susan, who taught me to sew, knit, crochet, and so much more from a young age, my work ethic from my dad, who has made me into a pretty decent "handy woman", and my entrepreneurial spirit from my grandfather, who successfully opened and ran an autoshop without even a high school diploma.
Before Asylum Fibers was launched in February of 2017, I pursued my Masters in Opera Performance at Yale School of Music. After completing that program, I moved to NYC, where I lived for over 10 years, and where Asylum Fibers was born. These were the years when I first became engrossed in the fiber community, attending my first Rhinebeck and VKL, and meeting so many amazing designers and makers. In 2022 I moved to Connecticut where the lower level of my home has become a much more suitable dye studio than the one that had previously overtaken my Queens apartment. ;-)
I now perform with Floydian Trip (we're a Pink Floyd tribute band), travelling to theaters across the Northeast. I work full-time in HR & Compliance in Manhattan and dye yarn the rest of the time. My schedule is as crazy as it sounds, but this small business isn't going anywhere. Color fuels joy and crafting is my happy place.
Susan
From her cozy home in Vassalboro, Maine, Susan Gilbert stitches beauty into everyday life as the Oak Grove Quilter. Armed with her longarm quilting machine, she transforms fabric into works of art, helping quilters bring their pieced tops to life with texture, movement, and beautiful attention to detail.
Susan first became an integral part of her daughter's business by crafting project bags and other sewn items, sold exclusively by Asylum Fibers. When she’s not at her sewing machine, Susan also enjoys knitting and crocheting. Several of her FOs have become treasured samples for Asylum Fibers festivals and trunk shows.
You can expect to see Susan at Cakepalooza, Vogue Knitting Live, and other in-person events, helping Stephanie as a "booth babe", assisting customers with finding the perfect yarn for their project.
Angela
Angela is Asylum Fibers’ Creative Collaborator (and occasional yarn whisperer). A lifelong maker with a textiles degree from RISD, she’s been knitting since her grandmother first put needles in her hands at age 8. These days, Angela helps dream up new collection themes, creates mood boards full of color magic, and knits samples that show off just how fun Asylum yarns can be.
When she’s not brainstorming with Stephanie or sharing trend inspo from the fashion and fiber world, you’ll find her teaching yoga and stretching for crafters, updating her Ravelry as Knitty & Knice, or posting WIPs on Instagram @angelaboswell. She always has multiple projects going (because… of course), and there’s always an “emergency sock” in her bag—because running out of knitting on a trip is not an option.
